Chapter Twelve

I take a quick bath, keeping my bad knee out of the too-hot water, and then change into some of Kinz’s clothes. We didn’t want to go back to my house, so she grabbed extra for me when we were at hers. She mostly wears jeans and cargo shorts—and uses all the pockets. I’m in her old gray cargo shorts, which are too big but at least I can belt them tighter. She wears her T-shirts tight, so that’s not a bad fit, but I have to roll up the sleeves of her sweatshirt. I hope the compression bandage around my knee makes me look somewhat badass despite the whole borrowing-my-big-sister’s-clothes effect.

Kinz settles me on the couch with my leg extended across pillows on the coffee table, so Avery can sit next to me. Then she heads for the front porch; nobody else is in the room.

“Wait, you’re leaving me?”

“Do you want moral support or do you want to make out with her?” she asks. “Priorities, okay?”

“What are you guys going to do?” I ask.

“Gossip about you and try to listen in and then, if you two get boring, we’re going to all cram onto the front porch couch and watch a movie.”

“Thanks, you’re a true friend.”

“I’m there for you, buddy,” Kinz says. She gives me a cheesy grin and two big thumbs up.

“Company!” Duke yells from the front porch.

Avery pauses inside the living room doorway. She’s wearing serious pajama bottoms—a very dark gray with golden pinstripe rectangles—and a light tan and black sweater over a cream-colored V-neck shirt. Babysitter Avery could watch me every day of the week and that would be just fine.

“How are you feeling?” she asks.

“Better now that you’re here.”

Her grin deepens as she joins me on the couch. She’s got her contacts in so both her eyes are brown, one a hint lighter than the other. I guess that’s to not weird out the kids she’s babysitting, though they’re missing out on life’s full coolness. I flash to the dream of being in the forest with her, how dark her eyes looked. I still haven’t told her all of it.

“Do you want me to come back tonight?” she asks. “The parents get home around midnight or one. Will you be up?”

“I’ll try to be. I’ve been really sleepy since that whole falling into a pit situation, so if I don’t text back, I will in the morning, okay?”

She nods and leans closer. Her fingers touch my jaw beside the bruise. “I’m sorry you got hurt.”

“Thanks.”

Our faces keep getting closer, all slow like in a movie, so I pull off my glasses and rest them on the back of the couch. From behind the couch, Boyfriend reaches a paw up to snag the frame. I keep one hand over them and ignore him. I’d ask Jay to come get him, but Avery’s fingers are sliding around behind my head and pulling me closer to her.
